Liquid Temperature Fan Control

Radiator Fan

Liquid temperature controlled fans eliminate sudden spikes in noise during short spikes in CPU or GPU use, resulting in a quieter computing experience. Liquid Temperature Fan Control technology exploits one of the significant advantages that water cooling has over air cooling—the fact that water has a thermal capacity 4000 times greater than air.

To visualize the impact of thermal capacity, contrast heating up a pot of water versus heating up a pot of air. Water takes a lot longer to warm up. This is thermal capacity at work. What thermal capacity brings to cooling is the ability to cool CPUs and GPUs across sharp spikes in load without changing fan speed or noise. When a load spike occurs, the extra heat generated by the processor is absorbed into the water without significantly raising water temperature. Fans continue to spin at low speeds and exhaust the modest increase over a longer period of time than the spike. In the case of a sustained load increase, liquid temperature control increases fan speed slowly to respond to the gradual rising temperature of the water.

Scientific studies show that rapidly changing noise levels are more irritating than slowly changing or steady levels. This is not really surprising considering hearing developed long before speech. The original function of hearing was to detect threats. A rapid change in fan noise is akin to that “breaking twig” our ancestors heard. Liquid temperature fan control takes advantage of water’s higher thermal capacity to dampen spikes in noise and deliver a superior quiet computing experience.

Asetek Liquid Temperature Fan Control is available in two versions, Automatic and Interactive. Both systems use firmware and temperature sensors built into the pump to control radiator fans. The automatic version uses Asetek engineered fan speed curves embedded into the firmware for "Plug and Play" fan control. The interactive version interfaces with Asetek ChillControl™, giving enthusiasts the choice of using preset fan speed curves or controlling fan speed with custom curve parameters.
