Asetek Receives Honors in 2013 HPCwire Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards

HPCwire Awards Recognize Outstanding Achievements in Science and Technology

Asetek® announced today that it has received top honors in the 2013 HPCwire Readers’ and Editors’ Choice Awards. HPCwire announced the winners at the start of the Opening Reception at the 2013 International Conference for High Performance Computing (HPC), Networking, Storage and Analysis (SC13), in Denver, Colorado. A complete list of award winners is available at HPCwire.com. Asetek was selected to receive the Editor’s Choice Award for the Best Application of Green Computing in HPC for Asetek’s liquid-cooling data center retrofit at the U.S. Department of Energy’s National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL).  Co-awardees NREL and Aspen Systems were also recognized for this project.

“We are honored to be acknowledged for our innovation in the field of data center cooling, and proud to be recognized by the editors of HPCwire, who are well known across the data center industry as experts in the field of high performance computing,” said Andre Eriksen, Asetek’s CEO and founder.

This award is for an energy-efficiency retrofit project in the Energy Systems Integration Facility (ESIF) data center at NREL, managed by Steve Hammond, Director of the NREL Computational Science Center. Project partner Aspen Systems installed the Asetek RackCDU liquid-cooling system as a retrofit to  an existing air cooled Aspen HPC cluster already installed in the NREL data center.

RackCDU is Asetek’s innovative hot water, direct-to-chip, data center liquid cooling technology, which removes heat from CPUs, GPUs, memory modules and other hot spots within the servers with an all-liquid path and rejects it into ambient outdoor air without chilling. This enables cooling savings in excess of 50%, density increases of 2.5x to 5x, and recovery of all the server energy removed by RackCDU for reuse in facility heating and cooling.

“It’s an honor and a privilege to be able to publically recognize the organizations and individuals whose hard work, dedication, and efforts over the past year have contributed to scientific discoveries and new breakthroughs in emerging technologies that will benefit mankind”, said Tom Tabor, CEO of Tabor Communications Inc. “The awards represent the highest level of recognition given by the high performance computing community to it’s own for their contributions to the advancement of science and technology. Our warmest congratulations go out to all the recipients of this year’s awards.”

The highly coveted HPCwire Readers’ Choice and Editors’ Choice Awards winners are selected by a polling of HPCwire’s global audience for the Readers’ Choice, combined with winners selected by a panel of editors, staff executives and HPC luminaries for the Editors’ Choice. The formal presentation of the awards takes place during the week of the Supercomputing Conference each year, which focuses upon high performance computing, hardware, software, networking, storage, and scientific breakthroughs. Widely recognized as one of the most prestigious awards presented during the conference, the awards honor demonstrated excellence and outstanding technological advancements achieved by the HPC community.
