Why Direct Drive Wheelbases are Essential for Competitive Sim Racing

When you sit down to race, there are three components involved; you as the driver, the wheel as the input (including the wheelbase), and the surface your car is on. Your wheel is what connects you to your car. It translates every intention you have into actions your car responds to. 

Positioning, turning, taking corners. At competitive pace, small delays or missing details can lead to bigger issues and impacts on your race outcome. Force feedback connects you to the road and what’s happening, while direct drive delivers even deeper advantages, keeping you in control and letting you feel each change and evolution in your race long before they become a hazard to your racing success. 

What Makes Direct Drive Unique Over Other Force Feedback Systems? 

Force feedback exists to communicate forces involved in racing to you through your wheel and wheelbase; steering torque, tyre load, surface texture, kerb strikes. All of it is translated as the resistance you feel in your hands. Systems with lower torque ratings compress those inputs; as the load increases, the details flatten. Those subtle grip changes are masked beneath more prominent forces, and the subtlety is lost along with the insights it offers.  

With direct drive, your steering remains proportional to tyre load. You can distinguish between that initial turn-in weight, the sustained lateral force, and the small fluctuations that indicate your tyres are approaching their limit.
